STUDENT STORIES

Jacob (White Earth Ojibwe), Doctor of Ed.,

Jacob is a recent MBA graduate currently serving his tribe as the Director of Economic Development, creating economic development opportunities and long-term financial sustainability for his tribe while pursuing his Doctor of Education degree.

As a first-generation college student and the son of a single mother, college never seemed like an option for Jacob. But after the loss of his mother and the birth of his son, he knew going back to school was the journey he needed to take for himself, for his family, and for his tribe. Now, five years after losing his mother, Jacob has an MBA and a clear vision for the future.

While pursuing his bachelor’s degree Jacob sought out every opportunity available to him – he was President of his school’s Student Senate, he joined student organizations, participated in trips abroad, all while excelling academically. Even during the pandemic Jacob never slowed down as he led the technical transition to virtual learning for his school while studying, working, and supporting his son.

A recent MBA graduate, he is currently serving his tribe as the Director of Economic Development, creating economic development opportunities and long-term financial sustainability for his tribe while pursuing his Doctor of Education degree. Ultimately, he wants to strengthen his community by helping build the leaders of tomorrow as President of a tribal college, where he will impact the lives of thousands of students who will go on to transform their lives and tribal communities.

Jacob is using his own journey to make sure he can help others on theirs.
